4Awesome cooling control!
By D. Rosing
For installation I'd give this unit a 3 1/2 out of 5 It does fit into a standard 30 inch cutout (good) but the gas inlet is in the far right rear corner of the unit and that interferes with cabinet installation if the unit is offset from the cabinet as in my case. The NGM805 does also extend under the countertop more than the unit it replaced, so some cabinet surgery was needed to allow the cooktop to sit properly. The hold-down attachment hardware was not thought through very well and had to be 'modified' to work properly.Cooking: this unit gets a 5 out of 5 in my book. Cooking control is AWESOME. That's the advantage of gas--you have INSTANT & INFINITE control of your cooking and don't have to wait for burners to cool down as on electric cooktops. The three sizes of burners let you do everything from large pots to warming chocolate and everything in between. The previous reviewer "Nice Guy" just had never worked with a gas cooktop before, indeed the very things he complained about are discussed in the user's manual ("Don't use a rounded WOK" and "Don't make the flame larger than the pot being used.") The unit doesn't deserve a lower rating because the user was unfamiliar with the physics involved. This baby cooks GREAT.In 'chocolate warming mode' the small 5500 BTU burners can be turned down so low that I can't even see that the flame is on (I'm tall), so it's a good thing there's a light on the front panel that lets you know when the burner is on. Automatic relight works fine in case a burner is blown out.The grates are very stable, much more so than the unit it replaced, a 22 year-old Kenmore that had grates that slipped out of position when the pot/pan was tilted for stirring or extracting grease. They were a pain to get seated into position again. With the Bosch I worry no more. There's more effective cooking area workspace with the Bosch; the 5 burners give you more flexibility than the 4-burner competitors.Cleanup: I give it 5 out of 5. No seams and rounded corners on the stainless top make cleanup MUCH easier than the old Kenmore unit. The burners are raised from the stainless top, keeping the burners free of overspills.Only gripe: The control knobs stick up above the level of the grates by about a half inch, so you can bump the knob as you take a heavy pot off the cooktop if you don't lift it up. Fortunately the knobs are metal and not plastic. (A lady in the store when we looked at this unit had to replace her melted platic knobs on a different make because of this problem) With the metal knobs this shouldn't be a big problem.

3It's OK. Nice to have 5 burners, but it is pretty crowded in 30"
By Ted
I'll break this up into sections:1) 5 burners:This is a pretty nice feature that we will end up using twice a year (turkey day and xmas). What I like about the five burner setup was unexpected: Most nights we only use 1 burner. I like being able to use the one right in the middle. It looks nice and orderly on the stove. Stupid, I know...We loaded up the cooktop with 5 pans, and while this IS possible, it is pretty crowded up on there. The pans in the back corners seemed a little close to the wall, but probably still OK.The front two small burners are the small ones, which makes sense considering they are the closest to the knobs. Only small pots and pans should go here. We learned the hard way that you shouldn't put large pans on these burners. Our furthest left knob has a slight melt spot in it after 3 days of use (the knobs are NOT metal - just have a metal film on them). This was caused by moving a hot pan from the center burner to the front corner burner just to get it out of the way.2) Burner flame sizeThe flame size can get so small that you can't even tell the burner is on. This is why there is a little red light on the control panel I guess. One time, after cooking dinner I turned the burner all the way down just to keep the food warm. It did this excellently, but then I forgot to turn it off. Two hours later, I saw the little red light and realized my potentially disastrous mistake.3) GratesAwesome. This is my favorite part of this cooktop. No issues that would be common with the round style grates I used to have.Yes, the height of the grate vs. flame is strangely high. This has the effect of making the whole cooking area warmer than the rest of the room. More of the heat seems to go into the air instead of into the pan as compared to my old cooktop. I am guessing this was done to get a more even heat distribution on the pan, with the side effect of a lot of heat loss to atmosphere.I am wondering bad how this effect will be when all 5 burners are cooking away in a few weeks... Might have to turn the house thermostat down...I can't agree with other peoples complaints about taking forever to boil water. The burners are sized larger nowadays than they used to be, so even if some heat escapes, you are still getting adequate heat to your actual cooking.4) CleanupReally easy. Not much to say about this.5) InstallationThe unit fits into your typical opening for a 30" cooktop. BUT it is about an inch deeper than my old cooktop which caused me some grief with the shelves below my cooktop. Had to cut them down a bit. I wondered about this when I bought it, and couldn't find the dimension of coutertop to bottom of stove anywhere. It would be nice if I could tell you this here, but I have since forgotten it. Sorry! Just be aware that you should investigate this before buying. The clamps which clamp the stove to the countertop are surprisingly crappy. It's like the clamp was outsourced to 5 year olds.6) WOULD I BUY THIS AGAIN?Probably not. We have survived all right for the last 30 years with 4 burners. We bought this over the 500 series because of the 5th burner and because I thought it had nice metal knobs. In hindsight, the 4 burner model would have been just as good and could have saved us some money. It looks almost as nice (stupid black plastic knobs though) and the burner spacing would have been better.Bosch 500 Series : NGM5054UC 30in Gas Cooktop with 4 Sealed Burners - Stainless SteelFinal note: I just found the replacement knobs for the 800 series at the sears parts store for $33 (have to buy them all as a set). I wonder if they would fit the 500 series; if so, buy the 500 series and those knobs separately.

4I really like, almost love this cooktop
By K. Foutz
Our old cooktop was a builders grade gas cooktop. The burner grates were enameled and nearly impossible to clean and I had really, really been looking forward to getting a new cooktop. We installed the cooktop ourselves and that job was pretty easy overall, but we started with the right size hole, so we didn't have to fuss with cutting a bigger hole. I'd definitely say it was a very doable do it yourself project and we really didn't have to look for directions beyond the bosch directions. We are very happy with how the cooktop cooks, the knobs are very sensitive and we can adjust to any temperature we need. Yes, the top is very crowded, but if you don't want that, then don't get the 5 burners, get the 4 burner cooktop, or get a bigger cooktop, there's really only so much you can do with a 30" cooktop. The clean up is incredibly easy. After dealing with our old cooktop, which I could never really get clean, the actual cooktop or the grates were both very difficult to deal with, I'm delighted to just have to clean up with soapy water. The knobs do get hot, but I can live with that. I recommend the le creuset pot handle grippers to deal with the hot knobs if your fingertips are sensitive to heat, otherwise, barehanded will do the trick.
